This day in HISTOROCK !! The Doors !!

            This day in HISTOROCK !!

In 1967, The Doors were banned from The Ed Sullivan Show after Jim Morrison broke his agreement with the show’s producers. Morrison said before the performance that he wouldn’t sing the words, ‘Girl, we couldn’t get much higher,’ from 'Light My Fire' but did anyway. The Doors also performed their new single 'People Are Strange. After giving assurances to the producer in the dressing room, Morrison told the band "we're not changing a word" and sang the song with the original lyrics. Sullivan was not happy and he refused to shake hands with Morrison or any other band member after their performance. He had a show producer tell the band that they would never be on The Ed Sullivan Show again. Morrison reportedly said to the producer, in a defiant tone, "Hey man. We just 'did' the Sullivan Show !!" lol During his short life, Morrison had many run-ins with the law. Possibly his most famous onstage incident was in 1969 when he was charged with lewd and lascivious behaviour after showing his penis to the audience during a show in Miami. He was later acquitted on charges of lewd and lascivious behavior, but was found guilty of exposing himself during the concert. Drummer John Densmore denied Morrison ever exposed himself on stage that night. There was also the failed attempt at recording a PSA for the anti drug group Do It Now and their "Speed Kills" campaign. Jim drove the Do It Now rep right out of the room !! Here is what Jim said during recording.  "Hey, how you guys out there doin'? This is your old buddy Jim Morrison. I sing with a group called the Doors. You might have heard of them. We done a few songs, but I never, never did a song on speed. Drunk? Hell yeahhh ..."  --- "Hello, this is Jim Morrison of the Doors, I just want to tell you that shooting speed ain't cool, so snort it." --- "Hello, this is Jim Morrison. Don't shoot speed. Christ, you guys, smoke pot!" --- "Hello, this is Jim Morrison from the Doors, and I just got one thing to say. Don't shoot speed. Speed kills. Please don't shoot speed. Try downers, yeah downers, barbs, tranqs, reds ... they're much less expensive and ... " The Do It Now rep got up and walked out of the room !!! So much for Jim's PSA about drugs lol. In March 1971, to get away from the court cases, Morrison flew with his girlfriend to Paris where they took up residence in the city in a rented apartment. Morrison died on July 3, 1971 at age 27 of an apparent heroin overdose. In the official account of his death, he was found in a Paris apartment bathtub by his girlfriend Pam Courson. Because there was no evidence of foul play, French law does not require an autopsy. The absence of an official autopsy has left many questions regarding Morrison's cause of death.  Morrison is buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, one of the city's most visited tourist attractions. His tomb in Paris is still today a shrine to his personality, visited daily by numerous mourners !! Due to his songwriting, voice, wild personality and performances, he is regarded by critics and fans as one of the most iconic and influential frontmen in rock music history !! RIP Jim !! Here is the video from the Ed Sullivan Show in 1967 !! Enjoy !!

Keep on ROCKIN !!
