This day in HISTOROCK !!
In 1968, Pink Floyd kicked off their first 20-date North American tour at the Kinetic Playground in Chicago. This HISTOROCK is more about the venue than the bands. The club became a driving force in the music business, hosting famous rock acts such as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Byrds, Coven, The Mothers of Invention, The Grateful Dead, Joe Cocker, Jeff Beck Group, Eric Burdon, The Small Faces, MC5, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly, Buffy Saint Marie, Fleetwood Mac, Rotary Connection, Savoy Brown, Vanilla Fudge, Muddy Waters, and Jefferson Airplane, just to name a few WOW !! INCREDIBLE !! Kinda like an encyclopedia of rock and roll in one nite club !! The club was opened on April 3/!968 by owner Aaron Russo and in the beginning it was called The Electric Theatre !! After being sued by The Electric Circus in New York, he changed the name to The Kinetic Playground. The list of bands that played there is like a who's who in rock royalty !! The bands I've listed are just some of the bands that played there and the posters are just for a 2-3 month period !! Talk about a musical orgasm !! After being open for only a year and a half, Iron Butterfly, Poco & King Crimson were supposed to play 3 nights, Nov 7,8,9, but after the Nov 7 show a fire broke out and the remaining shows were cancelled. The club re opened Dec 1972, but closed for good in June 1973 !! There was another venue called The Kinetic Playground in Chicago that closed in 2011, but had no relationship to the original !! They should have called it "Heaven", cause that what it was !!
