This day in HISTOROCK !! Guns'n'Roses !!

        This day in HISTOROCK !!

In 1987, Guns N’ Roses released their debut album on Geffen Records: "Appetite for Destruction" which featured the singles ''Welcome to the Jungle'', ''Sweet Child o' Mine'', and ''Paradise City''. The album now has worldwide sales in excess of 28 million, 18 million of which are in the US, making it the best-selling debut album of all time there !! The group came together in June 1985, when the final piece of the puzzle, former Hollywood Rose member Slash joined Axl Rose, Izzy Stradlin, Steven Adler & Duff McKagan to form Guns N' Roses and they embarked on a short, disorganized tour of the US West Coast. Before "Appetite For Destruction'' was recorded they had to decide on a producer. Paul Stanley of Kiss was considered, but he wanted to change too many things. Eventually Mike Clink, who had produced several Triumph records, was chosen, for being the first to record the band exactly the way they wanted !! Most of the songs on the album are about  personal experiences and daily life, such as "Welcome to the Jungle", some of the lyrics of which Rose wrote after he encountered a man in New York shortly after arriving there from Indiana in 1980 and "Mr. Brownstone", which is about the band's problems with heroin.  Slash states in his autobiography that Paradise City was written in the back of a rental van as they were on their way back from playing a gig in San Francisco, drinking and playing acoustic guitars when he came up with the intro. Duff McKagan and Izzy Stradlin started playing along, Slash started humming a melody when Axl Rose sang, ‘Take me down to the Paradise City.’ Slash chimed in with, ‘Where the girls are fat and have big titties' !! "Sweet Child O' Mine", was written about Rose’s girlfriend at the time, Erin Everly, whose father was Don Everly of The Everly Brothers !! In 2011, Axl Rose stated that his original idea for the cover art had been the photo of the Space Shuttle Challenger exploding, as used on the cover of Time Magazine in 1986, but Geffen refused, saying it was in bad taste !! Every once in a while, a great album that was clearly never intended for vast mainstream success, becomes a huge success !! "Appetite For Destruction" was one of those records and a year after its release, this dirty, sleazy, dangerous, record was #1 on the US charts and was being played everywhere on radio !! The band started to fall apart in 1996 when Slash quit the band !! A year later Matt Sorum who had replaced Adler was fired and Duff McKagan who was the last remaining original member also quit. Izzy Stradlin had already left the band in 1991 !! Slash has a great solo career happening and Axl Rose is the only original member remaining with the band and still tours as Guns'n'Roses !! Check out this awesome live version of "Sweet Child Of Mine" recorded live in 1992 !!

Keep on ROCKIN !!
