This day in HISTOROCK !! The late great Rory Gallagher !!

       This day in HISTOROCK !!

In 1995, Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher died after a chest infection set in following a liver transplant . Voted Melody Maker's Top Musician of the Year in 1972, ahead of Eric Clapton and auditioned for The Rolling Stones following the departure of Mick Taylor. Gallagher made his final performance on 10 January 1995 in the Netherlands !! He had been a member of Taste before going solo, sold over 30 million albums worldwide !! After the break-up of Taste, Gallagher toured under his own name, hiring former Deep Joy bass player Gerry McAvoy to play on Gallagher's self-titled debut album, Rory Gallagher !!  This ended up being a  twenty-year musical relationship between Gallagher and McAvoy,  the other band member was drummer Wilgar Campbell . During his high point in the 70's, Gallagher released 10 albums !! Known for his incredible marathon live performances, he has also worked with Muddy Waters and Jerry lee Lewis on their London Sessions releases and was almost a member of Deep Purple when he auditioned after Ritchie Blackmore left, but chose to form his own band !! One of the best and most underrated guitar players of our time !! In the later years of his life Gallagher developed a phobia of flying. He started taking very powerful medication to combat this . This combined with his alcohol use resulted in severe liver damage. He continued touring and by the time of his final performance on 10 January 1995 in the Netherlands, he was very  sick and the tour had to be cancelled. Gallagher was admitted to King's College Hospital in London in March 1995, and it was only then that the extent of his ill health became apparent: his liver was failing and the doctors determined that in spite of his young age a liver transplant was the only possible course of action !! 13 weeks later Rory was gone !! Check out this incredible live video of "Bullfrog Blues" and witness true greatness !! RIP Rory Gallagher !!

Keep on ROCKIN !!
Trike :-)
