This day in HISTOROCK !! The Beatles !!

        This day in HISTOROCK !!

In 1967, 200 million people saw The Beatles perform 'All You Need Is Love', live via satellite as part of the 1st live TV global link- up, 'Our World' . An all-star cast of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Graham Nash, Keith Moon and Gary Leeds provided backing vocals !! The song was written by John Lennon but credited to Lennon/McCartney . As part of the UK's contribution, The Beatles were asked to come up with a song that had a message everyone could understand . Beatle manager Brian Epstein, who passed away in August that same year said "It was an inspired song and they really wanted to give the world a message, The nice thing about it is that it cannot be misinterpreted. It is a clear message saying that love is everything" !!  According to journalist Jade Wright, "Lennon was fascinated by the power of slogans to unite people". When asked in 1971 whether songs like "Give Peace a Chance" and "Power to the People" were propaganda songs, Lennon's answer was "Sure. So was All You Need Is Love . I'm a revolutionary artist . My art is dedicated to change" !! The day before the broadcast, The Beatles decided to release 'All You Need Is Love' as their next single !! The song went no 1 in the UK for 3 weeks and later in the US for 1 week !! When asked if the song was specifically written for the Our World broadcast McCartney's reply was :  "I don't think it was written specially for it. But it was one of the songs we had. ... It was certainly tailored to it once we had it . But I've got a feeling it was just one of John's songs that was coming there . We went down to Olympic Studios in Barnes and recorded it and then it became the song they said, 'Ah. This is the one we should use.' I don't actually think it was written for it"!! One thing for sure, LOVE is a very powerful force and this song simply says it all !! Peace & Love :-) Check out this great video of the original broadcast and the story behind the recording !!

Keep on ROCKIN !!
Trike :-)
