This day in HISTOROCK !! The Jesus and Mary Chain !!

            This day in HISTOROCK !!

In 1987, The Jesus And Mary Chain were banned from appearing on a US music TV show after complaints of blasphemy when the group's name was flashed across the screen.  The CBS show asked the band to be called JAMC but the group didn't agree. Originally called The Poppy Seeds and then Death of Joey, they first told journalists that they had taken their  name from a line in a Bing Crosby film, although six months later they admitted that this wasn't true. Other accounts suggest that the name came from an offer on a breakfast cereal box, where customers could send off for a gold Jesus & Mary chain !!
The nucleus of the band centers around brothers Jim & William Reid, who were heavily influenced to form their own band after hearing the Sex Pistols in the 80's . They toured relentlessly and released their 1st single "Upside Down" in 1984 and it topped the UK Indie charts in Feb/85 and again in March, staying on the charts for 76 weeks !! This caught the attention of WEA records who signed them in 1985. They released their 1st single "Never Understand". The label refused to press the single due to its B-side, called "Suck", but went ahead given the alternative put forward by the band, a song called "Jesus Fuck" !!
1985 saw the release of their 1st album "Psychocandy" with it's The Jesus And Mary Chain low key and mellow vocal style, backed by the trademark JAMC distortion & fuzz saound !! This album in my opinion was and still is the best JAMC album !! It contained their most successful song, the incredible "Just Like Honey" !! Sometimes it's hard to duplicate that kind of magic you find on your debut release !! JAMC never did !! They would go on to release 5 more albums before splitting up in 1998 !! It was not until October 1999 that the split was made official.  On September 1998, William had a falling out on the tour bus with guitarist Ben Lurie before they were to play a sold out performance at the famous Los Angeles House of Blues. Jim appeared onstage drunk and barely able to stand or sing. William walked offstage about 15 minutes into their set, and the show ended. The audience was later refunded the price of their tickets. The band finished up their U.S. and Japanese dates without William, but from that point, it was clear that the band was at its end. Jim Reid said in 2006 of the tension between himself and William: "After each tour we wanted to kill each other, and after the final tour we tried" !! The band reformed in 2007 and they announced in November 2014 dates in the UK to debut the performance of Psychocandy Live, which will tour through 2015 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the albums release !! Here is the incredible and timeless "Just Like Honey" !! Enjoy :-)
