This day in HISTOROCK !! Bob Marley !!

             This day in HISTOROCK !!

In 1980, Bob Marley collapsed on stage during a concert at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Marley had collapsed in New York's Central Park while jogging, two days before and was told to immediately cancel the US leg, but flew to Pittsburgh to perform one final performance. This was the last time Marley ever appeared on stage !! Marley died of cancer on in May 1981. Bob Marley and the Wailers revolutionized the way people looked at reggae music !! Bob Marley and the Wailers released eleven albums, four of which were live albums !! In 1974, The Wailers were scheduled to open seventeen shows in the US for Sly and the Family Stone. After four shows, the band was fired because they were  blowing Sly & the Family Stone off the stage every night !! The Wailers broke up in 1974 with each of the three main members pursuing solo careers. The reason for the breakup is shrouded in mystery. Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh went their separate ways, but Marley kept using the Wailers name with new members !! On December 3,1976, two days before "Smile Jamaica", a free concert organized by the Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley in an attempt to ease tension between two warring political groups, Marley, his wife, and manager Don Taylor were wounded in an assault by unknown gunmen inside Marley's home. Marley received minor wounds in the chest and arm, but still performed 2 days later !! When asked why, Marley responded, "The people who are trying to make this world worse aren't taking a day off. How can I?" Marley left Jamaica at the end of 1976, with a self imposed exile to England !!  After 2 years of touring Europe, Marley flew to New York, where he played 2 shows at Madison Square Garden !! It was while in New York, Marley collapsed while jogging and was advised by doctors to stop touring !! Marley ignored the advice of doctors and appeared at the Stanley Theater (now called The Benedum Center For The Performing Arts) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 23,1980. This would be his last show ever !! His health deteriorated and after unsuccessfully fighting the cancer for 8 months in a Bavarian clinic, he flew home to Jamaica !! While Marley was flying home from Germany to Jamaica, his vital functions worsened. After landing in Miami, Florida, he was taken to the hospital for immediate medical attention. Bob Marley died on May 11,1981 at  University of Miami Hospital at the age of 36 :-(  His final words to his son Ziggy were "Money can't buy life" !! On may 21,1981, Jamaican Prime Minister Edward Seaga delivered the final funeral eulogy to Marley, declaring: "His voice was an omnipresent cry in our electronic world. His sharp features, majestic looks, and prancing style a vivid etching on the landscape of our minds. Bob Marley was never seen. He was an experience which left an indelible imprint with each encounter. Such a man cannot be erased from the mind. He is part of the collective consciousness of the nation" !!  RIP Bob Marley  Here is some great live footage featuring the songs Zimbabwe and Jammin !!

Keep on JAMMIN !!
