This day in HISTOROCK !! Phil Lynott !!

       This day in HISTOROCK !!

In 2005, a life-size bronze statue designed by Paul Daly of Phil Lynott was unveiled on Harry Street in Dublin. The ceremony was attended by his former Thin Lizzy band members Gary Moore, Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham. Lynott who died in 1986 aged 36 had a string of hits including 'Whiskey in the Jar', 'The Boys are Back in Town', 'Jailbreak' and 'Waiting for an Alibi' !! Lynott died of heart failure and pneumonia on January 4th, 1986 after being in a coma for eight days following a drug overdose. He was only 36 years old. Thin Lizzy caught everyone's attention in 1970 with the release of the Irish folk song "Whiskey In The Jar" !! This song was released as a single against the band's wishes, but gave them the exposure they needed as an opening band for the Slade tour in the UK !! Thin Lizzy released 5 albums before Jailbreak was released in 1976, scoring their 1st major hit with "The Boys Are Back In Town" !! The classic line-up back then featured Phil Lynott, Brian Robertson, Scott Gorham & Brian Downey !! They followed that up with the release of fantastic Johnny The Fox the same year. This has and still is my all time favorite Thin Lizzy album featuring the title track, ''Fool's Gold'', ''Don't Believe A Word" and more . Thin Lizzy made their mark as one of the best live bands ever and their 1978 live album Live and Dangerous was voted as the best live rock album of all time by Classic Rock magazine in 2004 !! You ask a lot of rock bands who influenced them and the name Thin Lizzy is bound to come up and the fact that they have never even been nominated for induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a JOKE !! Phil Lynott was a true showman and one of the most charismatic frontmen ever !! It's a shame that most of his adult life, Phil battled with drug and alcohol dependency, ultimately resulting in his death at a very young age !! Thin Lizzy and Phil Lynott have left an indelible stamp on the music world !! After Lynott's death the band continued to tour under the Thin lizzy name, but they stopped using the name in 2012, when they changed their name to Black Star Riders !! RIP Phil Lynott !! Here is some great live video from the best band not in the hall !! "Live And Dangerous" the full concert !! Enjoy !!

Keep on ROCKIN !!
Trike :-)
