This day in HISTOROCK !! The Wall !!

       This day in HISTOROCK !!

In 1982, the movie premier for Pink Floyd's live-action/animated musical film, "The Wall"  was held at The Empire, Leicester Square, London, England !! The film was originally screened at The Cannes Film Festival on May 23. The double album, released in 1979, is quite possibly the most successful concept record of our time !! It spawned the hugely popular "Another Brick In The Wall Part 2" and is still the 3rd largest grossing album in the US !! The screenplay was written by Pink Floyd singer/bassist & lyricist Roger Waters. The movie itself has hardly any dialogue, but is driven by the music of Floyd !! The album was intended to be a movie from the start, using live footage from the tour, starring Waters himself, while using Gerald Scarfe's animation and extra scenes !! They decided to make the live action/animated version with Bob Geldof as the starring character !! The story is about "Pink" a rock star and is often in flashback, and the dramatic concept is "The Wall" he erects to isolate himself from the world and its eventual demolition. The story is semi-autobiographical, dealing as it does with a central figure whose father died in World War II and who is a touring rock star. This had resonance for Waters, since his father, a former conscientious objector who volunteered in World War II, was killed at the Anzio beach-head in Southern Italy in 1944, when Roger was only 5 months old !! The film received the "two thumbs up" from Siskel & Ebert, with Ebert describing the film as "a stunning vision of self-destruction" !! On July 21st 1990, Roger Waters "The Wall" took place in Potzdamer Platz, Berlin at the site of Berlin Wall, which had been torn down only 8 months previously !! Over 350,000 people attended the event which was also broadcast live to fifty-two countries throughout the world. This was a significant event about the unification of East & West Germany and about freedom !!  Guest musicians included an all star cast of Van Morrison, Bryan Adams, Joni Mitchell, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Carrack, Sinead O'Connor, Rick Danko, Levon Helm and Garth Hudson of The Band, Marianne Faithfull, Thomas Dolby and local artists The Scorpions !! Here is some great video from that 1990 show !!

Keep on ROCKIN !!
