This day in HISTOROCK !! The Band !!

       This day in HISTOROCK !!

         HAPPY CANADA DAY !!

In 1968, The Band released their debut album Music From Big Pink. The album, which features their first hit single The Weight, was recorded in studios in New York and Los Angeles in 1968, and followed the group's backing of Bob Dylan on his 1966 tour (as The Hawks). The name The Hawks comes from being the backing band for Canadian music legend Ronnie Hawkins !! The Band consisted of proud Canadians  Rick Danko, Robbie Robertson, Richard Manuel & Garth Hudson, with Levon Helm being from the US . They were Hawkins back-up band from 1958-1963 and in 1964, they separated from Hawkins, after which they toured and released a few singles as Levon and the Hawks and the Canadian Squires !! Bob Dylan ended up hiring them in 1965 for his US tour and 1966 for his world tour !! Because they were always "the band" to various frontmen, Helm said "the name "The Band" worked well when the group came into its own" They officially started touring as The Band and released 10 studio albums !! The original configuration of The Band ended its touring career in 1976 with an elaborate live ballroom performance documented in Martin Scorsese's 1978 documentary The Last Waltz !! It was held, following an appearance on Saturday Night Live on October 30, on Thanksgiving Day of 1976 at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, California . Dylan, Hawkins, Joni Mitchell & Neil Young were among the many guest musicians !! They did reunite without Robertson in 1983 . The group was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1989, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 . In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked them No. 50 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time !! Here is a fantastic video from The Last Waltz and one of The Band's biggest hits !! What a great coincidence, or was it, that their 1st album was released in 1968 on Canada Day, July 1st :-)

Keep on ROCKIN !!
Trike :-)
