This day in HISTOROCK !! Syd Barrett !!

      This day in HISTOROCK !!

In 1975, During recording sessions for Wish You Were Here at Abbey Road Studios, London, England, Syd Barrett  turned up out of the blue as Pink Floyd were listening to playbacks of Shine On You Crazy Diamond — a song that happened to be about Barrett !! He was a founding member of Floyd, and was the lead vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter during the band's psychedelic years !! He is credited with naming the band, but left the group in April 1968 and was briefly hospitalized amid speculation of mental illness exacerbated by drug use !!  Barrett's use of psychedelic drugs, especially LSD, during the 1960s is well documented !!  By this time, the 29-year-old Barrett had shaved off all of his hair (including his eyebrows), become overweight, and his ex-bandmates at first didn't recognise him. Barrett eventually left without saying goodbye, and none of the band members ever saw him again !! Although it initially received mixed reviews, the album has since been acclaimed by critics and appears on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" !! It was lead writer Roger Waters's idea to split "Shine On" in two parts and use it to bookend the album around three new compositions ! Band members Richard Wright and David Gilmour have each declared "Wish You Were Here"  their favourite Pink Floyd album !! The album became an instant commercial success and record company EMI was unable to print enough copies to satisfy demand !! Barrett died on July 7,2006 at age 60 from pancreatic cancer !! RIP Syd !!

Keep on ROCKIN !!
Trike :-)
