This day in HISTOROCK !! The Monterey Pop Festival !!

      This day in HISTOROCK !!

In 1967, the three day Monterey Pop Festival in California began !! All the proceeds went to charity and when all the artists agreed to perform for free, the 'Summer of Love' was born !! Over 30 artists performed with the first major US appearances by The Who, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin !!  Also on the bill: The Byrds, Grateful Dead, Otis Redding, Simon & Garfunkel, The Steve Miller Band, Canned Heat, The Mamas And The Papas, Jefferson Airplane, Buffalo Springfield and The Electric Flag !! John Phillips, of The Mamas and The Papas would later write, "San Francisco, (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair)" about the festival, which became a hit for Scott McKenzie . The festival was put together in seven weeks by promoter Lou Adler, John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas, producer Alan Pariser, and publicist Derek Taylor . The festival board included Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson !! An estimated 200,000 attended over the three days . Within 24 hours of the festival finishing, the local mayor drafted a resolution outlawing any gathering of more than 2,000 people on the field where the Summer of Love had flowered !! On the site where the festival was held there is now a golf course and the hillside is covered with million-dollar condominiums !! I wonder if anyone who lives there or plays golf there, knows what happened almost 50 years ago !! Staying with festivals, 19 years ago today the Tibetan Freedom Concert was held at Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, which drew a sellout crowd of 100,000 people !! Performers included : Rage Against The Machine, Beastie Boys, Smashing Pumpkins, Fugees, Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Lee Hooker, Beck, Sonic Youth, De La Soul and Richie Havens !! It was the biggest US benefit since Live Aid in 1985 !!

Keep on ROCKIN !!
Trike :-)
